Hokies AD Jim Weaver wants 10 ACC Games...of course he does.

Richmind Times-Dispatch has an article today about how Jim Weaver wants teams to have 10 ACC games and 2 out of conference games, one of which must be against a BCS opponent.  This comes as no shock, right?

That is, now that Virginia Tech is a national power (I just threw up a little bit in my mouth), and is getting full of its steady diet of cupcakes (right, ragekage?), of COURSE it makes sense that VT AD would be pushing for a required 10 ACC games. After all, God help us all if UVA follows a similar path and actually gets consistently good on account of carbs and sweets!

Am I reading too deep into this? Is Weaver perhaps not as devious as I am painting? Or is he not smart enough to devise such a plan?

Yeah, makes sense to me

I think you’re exactly right. Tech wants to play folks they’re familiar with. They haven’t had a lot of luck playing outside the ACC, especially against ranked teams from the BCS conferences. I mean, look, back in the day, UVA played, Texas, Michigan, and Georgia- in their HEYDAY, in one season! We took ‘em on and didn’t look back. Tech, though- look at them versus LSU, or Alabama, or Boise State, or Stanford, etc. They’re a little more gunshy.

Like it or not, the average caliber of teams in the ACC doesn’t match up to the average in the SEC. True, we don’t gear our entire reason for being around football, but still. Tech wants to ante up as many "W"s as it can before trying to get into the National Championship game and come away with it. I don’t blame them. Frank Beamer’s not getting any younger, and Virginia’s a resurgent force. I think this is something that a lot of Hokie fans realize, too. The folks over at Gobbler Country are pretty tame about it, but you look at some of the more, uhm, colorful blogs, and they’re almost rabid when they hear things about Virginia’s success on the recruiting trail, etc. One person, I recall, was screaming (in response to Mario Nixon’s switch) they wanted every TV set in the 757 be forced to set to the UVA/VT game, and they wanted to grind us into the dust 100-0, and show them who the real team was, and f*** this and that for wanting to commit to UVA instead of VT, nobody should want to do that, et cetera.

Perhaps Jim Weaver sees that writing on the wall, and is trying to do what he can to stave that off. Virginia Tech football is the raison’detre of most VT fans (that, and bass fishing, apparently). You have good guys like the folks at Gobbler Country; they’re as dedicated to all VT sports as we are to UVA ones, but I lived and worked and grew up in Christiansburg and Roanoke, and I promise you if Tech ever starts losing football in a serious way, those fans will evaporate. Fast. And that causes heads to roll and people to lose jobs.
