Another old Hoo sent me this and I thought I should share it. A Jefferson nickel to anyone who knows the name of Obed's high school. NMer
In anticipation of this week's game against Clemson, I thought it would be fun (in a painful sort of UVa way) to review some of the history of this series. (Don't worry, this is a quick and funny/painful read.)
Let's start in 1966 when Clemson legendary coach Frank Howard referred to UVa as "white meat."
The next stop involves Obed Ariri. Any Wahoo from 1980 1remembers his name. I have a distinct foggy memory of his field goal. That fog I am sure eased my pain.
A 52 yard field goal to win the game -- I call that seizing defeat from the jaws of victory!
Of course there is October 1982, the first night game in Scott Stadium (with the portable lights) with our opponent being the Tigers. All of that is relevant but it was the amount of rain that fell during the game that was the most relevant fact of this game. And it was not a warm night either.
Thanks for our minds ability to forget traumatic things, I had forgotten that we had lost to Clemson 29 straight times -- that is until 1990. The following article about that game is a little long but the first few paragraphs are priceless.
What will Saturday bring? Based on yesterday's games, I would suspect that Mr. Watford will try to air it out against the Tigers' secondary. But while that secondary is not the strength of the Tigers, it sure as heck is a lot better than the Twerps secondary. I predict drinks back at the Wahoogate by halftime. Then again, what else would you expect me to predict???
