The reigning NCAA Doubles Champions Michael Shabaz and Drew Courtney will be playing on a bigger stage this week, as the Cavaliers duo take on the No. 2-ranked Bryan Brothers in the Legg Mason Classic. This is the first professional tournament that Shabaz and Courtney have played in together.
We've been keeping you posted on 'Hoos in Wimbledon and thought we'd give you an update on this fine U-S-A morning. Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey, who made the main draw through the qualifying tournament, was knocked out after the first round by Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, neither of whose names I can pronounce. But the story of the day is former UVa All-American Dominic Inglot, who, together with partner Chris Eaten, have upset the top seeded duo in the tournament!
Following up on my post from Tuesday, Wahoo alumnus Somdev Devvarman will be making his second-ever appearance at Wimbledon this year, this time with partner and Wahoo alum Treat Huey, who is making his grand slam debut. Another Cavalier joining them in the doubles tennis tournament is Dominic Inglot, also marking his grand slam debut.
Former Virginia Cavalier, All-American, and national champion Somdev Devvarman gets better by the day, and recently achieved a career-high ATP ranking of 104, as announced last week and is the top-seeded men's singles player from India. He qualified for the French Open, but will not be playing in the gentlemen's singles for Wimbledon this year.
For Michael Shabaz, this weekend was more of the same, as he and partner Drew Courtney earned the 2010 NCAA Doubles Championship on Monday in Athens, Georgia. Shabaz is a repeat champion, having accomplished the same feat last year with then-partner Dominic Inglot (even against the same . This marks the fourth straight individual championship for the Virginia men's tennis program!
The Virginia men's tennis team continue to show why they are the top ranked team in the nation and current favorites to win the NCAA Championships this weekend, blanking both first and second round opponents.  Dispatching Navy in the first round and Wake Forest in the second, the Cavaliers are moving on to the round of 16, where they'll face Duke, who advances to the round of 16 for the first time since 2006.
The Virginia women's tennis team's NCAA team title came to an end yesterday to a familiar foe, the Duke Blue Devils.  Duke, the reigning NCAA champions, advanced to the round of 16 after topping Virginia 4-1.  This is the second time the Cavaliers have fallen to the despicable devils this season, hosting a 2-5 defeat early April.
