Virginia Field Hockey fell 2-3 to North Carolina in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament, putting an end to an amazing 20-4 season, the most number of wins any Cavalier field hockey team has ever put together. Paige Selenski was recognized as the South Region Player of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, and five Cavaliers were selected to the all-south region teams. Meanwhile, senior Lauren Elstein was honored as the Division I field hockey recipient of the NCAA's Elite 88 Award, recognizing the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at the NCAA tournament. Despite the Cavaliers' comeback victory over Duke on Senior Day on Saturday, Virginia did not receive a first round bye in the 2009 ACC Field Hockey Championships held this upcoming weekend in Charlottesville.  Maryland (18-0, 5-0 ACC) earned the top seed and a first-round bye, while North Carolina (16-1, 4-1 ACC) was awarded the No. 2 seed and the other bye.

You know I'm among the first to blame refs for anything.  To be fair, sometimes they really do miss a call.  Othertimes, I'm fairly positive they're behind my work cafeteria not having onion rings.  The merits of that argument notwithstanding, this week they really did royally screw up on the third-ranked team in the nation.  They forgot about a game.

One Virginia squad that has not received the media attention it really should is the Virginia Field Hockey team.  While the football team is trying to make a comeback and impress any pair of eyes who will give them the time of day. the field hockey team has already settled near the top of the collegiate world.
