Congratulations are in order for the Virginia softball team, who this weekend earned the program's first-ever bid to the NCAA Championships! The Cavaliers, who are 33-21, will be taking on Louisville (39-17) in the Knoxville Regional, hosted by Tennessee.
Virginia concluded its regular season by dropping a series 1-2 to Florida State. In the process, however, the Cavaliers have clinched second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference and are looking to extend its best season ever. Nicole Koren, Abby Snyder and Sarah Tacke were honored on Sunday's Senior Day at The Park. After picking up her 26th victory of the season on Saturday, freshman Melanie Mitchell is just one win away from tying the school record.

While three Virginia programs picked up ACC titles this weekend, what may have gone unnoticed was the Virginia softball team, who continues to make its mark in school record books.  This weekend, the Cavaliers earned a sweep over Boston College, going into nine innings in the third game to complete the sweep. With the win, Virginia is now 32-18 (12-5 ACC), the most number of conference wins any Cavalier softball squad has ever recorded.

The Virginia softball team escaped this weekend with a 2-1 series victory over NC State, splitting a doubleheader on Saturday and earning a 1-0 win on Sunday behind the pitching of freshman Melanie Mitchell. With the wins, the Cavaliers (27-18, 9-5 ACC) have tied a school record of 9 ACC wins set back in 2005 and look to head to the Regionals for the first time in school history. Mitchell earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for her performance against NC State and Hampton earlier this week.

A pair of Virginia Cavaliers, senior outfielder Sarah Tacke and freshman pitcher , were selected Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for the period ending March 14, announced today. The Cavaliers posted a 4-2 record during the week, including doubleheader sweeps of Norfolk State and conference-foe Maryland, Virginia's first series win against the Terrapins since 2006.

The Virginia softball team (12-9, 2-0 ACC) opened Atlantic Coast Conference play with two victories over Maryland (10-9, 0-2 ACC) to sweep the doubleheader Sunday at Taylor Stadium in College Park, Md. Behind two solid outings from pitcher Melanie Mitchell, the Cavaliers claimed the first game, 5-3, and won the second, 3-1.
