Cavalier fourth-year Amory Davis continued his stellar run at this year’s US Amateur, knocking off #1 seed Jeff Wilson 3&1 in the first round of match play Wednesday.

One current and one future ‘Hoo advanced to the match play portion of the US Amateur held at Chambers Bay Golf Club near Seattle. Fourth-year Amory Davis clinched the 64th seed, winning a 16-for-6 playoff to advance to play stroke play medalist Jeff Wilson in the first round. Recent UVa commitment Denny McCarthy also advanced to match play, shooting 71-74 to earn the 26th seed and will face San Diego Freshman All-American Alex Ching in the first round.

Following the first round of stroke play at the US Amateur in Seattle, Cavalier fourth-year Amory Davis is tied for 11th, shooting 2-under par 70 on Monday morning. He had three birdies, 14 pars, and a bogey on the 7,317 yard Home Course and will begin his second round at the Chambers Bay Course at 1:50pm Tuesday. With a solid round Tuesday, Davis should clinch a high seed when the final 64 are decided.

Following 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying, two Cavaliers have advanced to match play at the US Women's Amateur in Charlotte, NC. Fourth-year All-American Calle Nielson and second-year All-American Brittany Altomare each secured a spot in the 64-player match play field set to begin play Wednesday.

After leading his team to its best-ever showing at NCAAs (11th) in June, being named ACC and Virginia State Coach of the Year, and earning the verbal commitment of one of the top juniors in the country in Denny McCarthy, head men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent could say he’s had a pretty good summer. Sargent put the proverbial icing on the cake on Monday however, by qualifying for this year’s US Amateur Championship, to be held at Chambers Bay Golf Club just outside Seattle in late August.
