At a reception at the White House on Sept. 13, President Barack Obama will honor student-athletes from across the NCAA, including members of Virginia's NCAA Champion men's soccer and rowing teams.
Virginia couldn't pull of the Varsity Eight victory, but when all was said and done, the Cavaliers stood alone atop the podium with the program's first-ever team national championship since the title's inception in 1997. That's right, step aside, Stanford. You're yesterday's news, Yale. The "Public Ivy" is in town now.
Not that this comes as any surprise to anyone with even a fleeting interest in Virginia Rowing, but the third-ranked team in the nation earned a bid to the NCAA Championships at Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, CA, hosted by Washington State University. This is the 13th bid in 14 seasons for the 'Hoos, who are still searching for their first ever national title.
Virginia rowing won its fourth straight overall and South Region title this weekend at the South/Central Regional Championships in Tennessee.  The No. 3 Cavaliers won four of the five events, including the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Open Four.  The Novice Eight finished second to Wisconsin.
The third-ranked Virginia rowing team swept five races against Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon at the Rivanna Reservoir. The Cavaliers won the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, Second Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight races.
Virginia's First Varsity Four Tuesday was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Crew of the Week for the first time this year, after defeating both 4th-ranked Yale and 6th-ranked Princeton on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J. last Saturday.
