The Cavalier Wrestling Team, which won its first ACC title since 1977 just this year, has been named hosts to the 2011 ACC Championships. The tournament will be held at John Paul Jones Arena, according the Jeff White of VirginiaSports.com on his blog.

Following a record season which included an ACC Championship and a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, Virginia wrestling head coach Steve Garland has been named the ACC Coach of the Year, as voted upon by the conference coaches and announced by the conference office Friday. Garland is the first Virginia wrestling coach to earn the honor, which the conference began awarding in 1986.

Virginia is sending a school-record eight wrestlers to the NCAA Championship, which starts today and continues through Saturday in Omaha, Nebraska (our baseball team is watching enviously as we speak).  The team picked up their first ACC Championship in over three decades, and look to continue their success in Omaha, turning to Chris Henrich, Ross Gitomer, and Brent Jones to lead the team.

It's been a long 23-year wait, but the Virginia wrestling team was rewarded with its first ACC Championship since 1977 this past weekend.  The No. 22 Cavaliers upset No. 10 Maryland and No. 14 Virginia Tech to capture the title, in no small part thanks to ACC champions Chris Henrich and Mike Salopek.  This is just their fourth ACC title overall, with the other three coming in 1974, 1975, and 1977.

Chris Henrich (Jr., Lansdale, Pa.), Ross Gitomer (Sr., Flemington, N.J.) and Mike Salopek (R-Fr., North Huntingdon, Pa.) each recorded wins for Virginia. UVa finished the regular season with 16 dual wins – second most in school history.

The Cavaliers will wrestle the Blue Devils at approximately 7 p.m. Friday at Cameron Indoor Stadium following the Duke-Virginia Tech match, then will stay in the Triangle area and take on the Wolfpack at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum.

Matt Snyder, courtesy UVa Media RelationsThe Virginia wrestling team, ranked 16th nationally, nearly dug itself out of an early 13-point hole before falling short in a 19-16 loss to No. 14 Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon in front of a near-capacity crowd at Memorial Gymnasium. The tightly-contested match featured five bouts decided by three points or fewer.
