In case there was any question amongst those who may have only seen one or two Virginia Baseball games, keep an eye out on left handed pitcher Danny Hultzen this season, whose accolades just keep rolling in. Hultzen was named a 2011 Preseason First Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) earlier this week, and today was named a 2011 Louisville Slugger Preseason First Team All American.
The Bethesda, Md. native posted an 11-1 record last season with a 2.78 ERA and 123 strikeouts. In 2010, he was named the ACC Pitcher of the Year and a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award, CBF Pitcher of the Year Award and Dick Howser Trophy. His 11 wins led the ACC and was 13th nationally.
Hultzen, a junior, is a two-time All-American and First Team All-ACChonoree. He held opponents to an ACC-low .193 batting average, ranking ninth nationally in hits allowed per innings (6.33), 13th in strikeouts and 36th in ERA.Virginia will open the season against UAB on February 18 at the Auburn Tournament. Opening pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
