Virginia senior Matt McLean registered three NCAA ‘B’ times en route to being selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming & Diving Men’s Performer of the Week. His teammate, sophomore Lauren Perdue, broke two of her own school records and has been honored as the league’s Women’s Performer of the Week.
McLean led the Virginia men at the Georgia Invitational, winning two individual titles and anchoring the first-place 800 freestyle relay team. The Sterling, Va., native won the 500 free on Friday in 4:17.44 and the 200 free on Saturday in 1:34.90. His time in the 500 free currently ranks first in the league. He also added a fifth-place performance in the 200 butterfly on Sunday. All three of his individual times were NCAA ‘B’ qualifying. McLean also led off the 400 freestyle relay team that placed second and anchored the 400 medley relay team that finished fifth. The Cavalier men finished fourth in a field that included four ranked teams.
Perdue surpassed program-best marks she had previously set in the 50 and 100 freestyle at the Georgia Invitational. The Greenville, N.C., native recorded a time of 22.16 in the 50 free on Friday, breaking her previous record of 22.26. On Saturday, she collected first-place honors in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.12. Then on Sunday Perdue broke another school record with a time of 48.16 in the 100 freestyle, besting the previous mark she had set of 48.61. All three of her times currently lead the conference and met NCAA ‘B’ standards. Perdue also swam on the third-place 800 free relay team, led-off the third-place 400 free relay team and anchored both the 200 and 400 medley relay teams, all of which earned ‘B’ cuts. The Cavalier women placed third in a field that included three ranked teams.
