The No. 23 Virginia women's tennis team blanked No. 58 Winthrop 7-0 Monday afternoon at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers (4-2) returned to action for the first time in 15 days and showed little rust in shutting out the Eagles (3-3) for their second 7-0 win of the season.
The Cavaliers opened the match strong by winning all three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) and Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) topped Elizaveta Zaytseva and Yasmine Alkema 8-2 at the No. 1 position. Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Neela Vaez (Perrysburg, Ohio) clinched the doubles point for the Cavaliers with their 8-3 win at No. 3 over Lisa Wilkinson Paula Pereira. Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 2 over Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli.
Virginia quickly clinched the win in singles. Fraser made the score 2-0 with her 6-0, 6-0 win over Alkema at the No. 2 position. Hardenbergh followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Zaytseva at No. 1. Stevens clinched the victory with her 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Portioli. Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) and Katie Gater (Dunblane, Scotland) added straight set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively and Vierra completed the sweep with a win at No. 3 in a third-set match-tiebreaker.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday as they host William & Mary. Match time at the Boyd Tinsley Courts is 4 p.m.
