Don't look now, but Virginia is well on its way to its best spring sports season ever. In addition to the baseball, men's tennis, and men's lacrosse programs holding or having held a number one ranking this month (the baseball team just dropped a series against NC State), the Virginia rowing program earned the top spot in today's Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll.
Virginia's Varsity Eight has been named the ACC Crew of the Week for two-consecutive weeks, and has not lost a race this season (5-0). UVa won the prestigious Jessop-Whittier Cup and the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy with two first-place finishes in the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight at the San Diego Crew Classic (March 28).
Most recently, the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four swept then-No. 10 Michigan and then-No. 12 Ohio State at Lake Monticello on Saturday (April 3).
The Cavaliers are back in action on Saturday, April 17, at Princeton, N.J. UVa will race against sixth-ranked Princeton and fourth-ranked Yale.
The Virginia Rowing program is the fifth squad this year to ascend to the top - the three aforementioned, plus men's soccer, who won the national championship and finished the polls at No. 1. In all, 11 athletics programs at Virginia have garnered a No. 1 poll ranking: baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, field hockey, football, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, rowing, men's soccer, women's soccer and men's tennis.
