Congratulations are in order for the Virginia softball team, who this weekend earned the program's first-ever bid to the NCAA Championships! The Cavaliers, who are 33-21, will be taking on Louisville (39-17) in the Knoxville Regional, hosted by Tennessee.
Earlier this season, the Hoos set a school record with 13 ACC wins on the season. Hoping to continue their success in the ACC Tournament, the second-seeded Cavaliers fell to the seventh-seeded Hokies 2-1 in eight innings.
The Cavaliers are led by freshman first-team All ACC pitcher Melanie Mitchell, who is just one win shy of tying the school record for most wins in a single season. Also leading the team are second-team All ACC selections Nicole Koren and Sarah Tacke.
"It's been 30 years in the making," said Virginia head coach Eileen Schmidt in the official press release. "I think its great we have the opportunity to play for the national championship. There are 290 schools and we are one of the top 64."
NCAA action begins for the Cavaliers this Friday at 4:00 p.m.
