Two Virginia Golfers Named All-ACC; Player and Coach of the Year

Members of the Virginia Men’s Golf team were recognized this morning as the ACC announced the 2010 All-ACC Men’s Golf Team.  Sophomore Ben Kohles and junior Will Collins both captured their first All-ACC honors.  Kohles was also named the ACC Co-Player of the Year, a title he shares with Florida State’s Brookes Koepka.  Coach Bowen Sargent was named the ACC Coach of the Year, his first such honor in this conference.

Virginia had placed second in the ACC Championship, its best finish since its 1996 second-place finish.  Sargent has been head coach at Virginia since 2004.

Most recently, Virginia captured its seventh Cavalier Classic title this past weekend, in their only Birdwood Golf Course appearance of the season.  Virginia led that tournament at the end of Day 1, and finished twenty strokes ahead of the next closest squad.  Kohles picked up his third individual first-place finish of the season, and is only the third Virginia golfer to win the event.

Collins had finished second individually at the ACC Championship, his best tournament finish of his career.  He was the fourth Virginia golfer to have finished second in the event.

NCAA regional assignments will be announced next week on May 10.  Virginia should make the tournament, and if so it would be their third straight appearance.
