With World Cup Fever hitting America, we thought we’d slide this right in. Earlier this month we gave you the story of Joey Vide, former Virginia Cavaliers soccer player turned pro, but who was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. While there have been a number of fundraising events already, we wanted to follow up with two additional events – one in New York and one in Charlottesville – that you might want to check out if you’re in the area.
If you’re in New York, you’re going to want to stop by Nevada Smiths ("Where Football is Religion") this Saturday, June 26th from 9:00 – 11:00 p.m. The New York Red Bulls travel to play at the Wizards beginning at 8:30. As you know if you’ve read Joey’s story, he used to play for New York and they’ve been very supportive of him, raising money in a number of ways. Nevada Smiths (Third Ave. between 11th and 12th) will be hosting an open bar viewing party for just $35, which includes beer and top shelf liquor. 15% of the profit from that night will go directly towards The Friends of Joe Vide to help pay his medical bills. For those in the city, you should definitely check it out – where else are you going to get an open bar on a Saturday night for just 35 bucks anyway?
For those in Charlottesville, you should check out McGrady’s Irish Pub – a personal favorite of mine (they have bar shuffleboard!). The details haven’t been finalized yet, but they will be having a benefit show Saturday, July 17, with a portion of the proceeds going to The Friends of Joe Vide. To keep up with this upcoming event, visit McGrady’s website.
We hope those in New York and Charlottesville are able to have a drink in honor of former Wahoo Joe Vide, who continues to battle strong against Hodgkin’s and against his insurance company.
