Women's Soccer Blanks Liberty, Colgate; Lenczyk Named National Player of the Week

The No. 7 Virginia women’s soccer team got their season off right this season, blanking Liberty 4-0 on Friday night and doing it again to Colgate 6-0 on Sunday. The star of both games was senior forward Meghan Lenczyk, who was named this week’s TopDrawerScorer.com’s National Player of the Week.

"We were able to keep the pressure on a team that is probably the best Liberty team we have played in all the years of this series," said head coach Steve Swanson.

For the record, Liberty has never scored a goal in the 10-game series between the two schools.

Sunday, the Colgate Raiders were only able to get a single shot off, as the Cavaliers outshot the Raiders 30-1 in a very lopsided contest.

Lenczyk scored two goals and notched an assist in the Friday night matchup, and found the back of the net twice more on Sunday. She becomes the first Cavalier since 1997 to post consecutive multi-goal games, and is only the second ‘Hoo to receive TopDrawerScorer.com’s National Player of the Week honors.

Virginia hits the road this week in the Penn State Invitational, against the host Nittany Lions on Friday night and Connecticut on Sunday afternoon.
