GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia's 27th-ranked senior Michael Shabaz has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week after leading the top-ranked Cavaliers to four straight wins to open the dual match season.
Shabaz posted a 3-0 record at No. 1 singles, winning all of his matches in straight sets. Shabaz's week was highlighted by a 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 11 Dennis Nevolo of 16th-ranked Illinois. Shabaz, a native of Fairfax, Va., also posted a 3-0 record at No. 1 doubles with teammate Drew Courtney. The reigning NCAA doubles champions have won 13 consecutive matches against collegiate competition dating back to last year.
In addition to his singles win over Illinois' Nevolo, Shabaz scored straight-set wins over Anton Andersson of William & Mary and No. 71 Stephen Havens of 36th-ranked Notre Dame. Shabaz defeated Andersson by a 6-4, 6-0 score and downed Havens 6-3, 6-0.
