On a night when the focus of most of Wahoo Nation was down in Miami Gardens watching the football team upset the Hurricanes for the second year in a row, the Virginia women's soccer team was playing their final regular season contest against none other than the Miami Hurricanes.
The star of the night was freshman phenom Morgan Brian, who scored both goals of the night as the ninth-ranked Cavaliers downed the Hurricanes 2-0 at Klöckner Stadium.
Both of Brian's goals came late in the game, as the first 79+ minutes of action were scoreless. But in the 80th minute, she put a header into the net off a cross from Julia Roberts. Just over three minutes later, she got an unassisted goal on a beauty of a shot to the lower corner of the near post. She just squeaked it in between the goalie and the post.
The goals were Brian's seventh and eight of the season, solidifying her in 2nd place on the Cavaliers roster in goals and points (22). She trails only golden girl Caroline Miller.
As I mentioned earlier this week, Virginia was in position to finish anywhere from fourth to first in the conference depending on how last nights matches played out. Last night, Duke defeated N.C. State 1-0 and North Carolina lost to Maryland 2-1 in overtime. That means that Virginia will be the #2 seed in the ACC Championship and will host #7 seeded Maryland on Sunday at 1pm at Klöckner Stadium. Here's how the whole championship bracket looks:
- #8 Virginia Tech at #1 Duke
- #7 Maryland at #2 Virginia
- #6 Florida State at #3 North Carolina
- #5 Wake Forest at #4 Boston College
