Today Baseball America released their 2011 Pre-Season All-American squad. To nobody's surprise, 3rd year Danny Hultzen was tabbed for the First Team; and the only representative on the first team from the ACC. This marks the third pre-season First Team All-American squad Danny has been picked for with the other two being the College Baseball Magazine and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). This looks to be a big year this year for Hultzen that is starting with pre-season awards and should end with high quality season awards, a strong finish for the Hoos(National Title?), and a first round draft.
To go along with his three First-Team awards, Danny has also been named one of the top prospects for the upcoming draft in June. The College Baseball Blog has named Hultzen their 14th best prospect in America even though I think he should be rated a bit higher.
As written before, these accolades are coming as no surprise due to the amazing years Hultzen turned in his first two years with the Cavalier program. As a 2nd year, Danny was a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award (best amatuer player; Bryce Harper won), Pitcher of the year, and the Dick Howser Trophy (Heisman for baseball). On top of being a first -team All-American and the first -team All-ACC he was also named the ACC pitcher of the year for last year. His first year he was also an All-American and All-ACC while being named the ACC freshman (1st year) of the year.
Big expectations for Danny this year and I know nobody better to handle those expectations. The team has been highly dependant on him for the last two years and this looks to be no different. Who knows how this year will work out but what I would bet on? Danny Hultzen being a stud on the mound for the Virginia Cavaliers.
