Cy Young, Don Larsen, Sandy Koufax, Roy Halladay, and now Will Roberts. What was that list all about? Well those are just five pitchers who can say that they have thrown a perfect game. Okay, those other four pitched theirs in the Major Leagues but throwing a perfect game against anyone is impressive.
Tuesday night at the Dav, Will Roberts pitched the best game of his three year career in a UVa uniform and if you asked him he would probably say it was the best game of his life. Roberts faced the minimum 27 batters over 9 innings and didn't allow a runner on base the entire game. Will was even a bit more than just perfect. He also struck out 10 batters including two of the final three outs in the 9th.
Judging from the comments that the radio personalities were making it sounds like Roberts was just as strong in the 9th as he was in the early innings. They remarked on how in control he was of his pitches and how hard he was throwing so late into the game. To give you a perspective on Will, he usually "sits" in the low 90s through most of a start. Well, tonight in the last inning he remained in that area and was able to blow it by some GW batters at the end of the game.
Roberts perfect game is even more impressive in that in the 120 year history of the UVa baseball program, it is the first perfect game to be thrown by anyone! I am not sure how many no-hitters have been thrown in program history but I do know that is the first to be thrown since Mike Ballard pitched a no-no against BC in 2006.
With the win, Will moves to 5-0 on the year and is tied with fellow 3rd year Danny Hultzen for the best record on the team. Danny eeks out the ERA lead over Will as he has recorded 2 more outs than Roberts has been able to.
The Hoos move to 25-2 overall on the season and defend their #1 ranking. The boys have Wed and Thurs off before traveling to Blacksburg to take on lowly VPI&SU. I'll be giving some more interesting #RivalryWeek stats the rest of this week on Twitter @STLUVaBaseball and if you want to congratulate Will Roberts his Twitter handle is @WRoberts25. Tell him how awesome he is! And, of course, GO HOOS!
