Virginia Lacrosse Has Five Named to 2011 Tewaaraton Award Watch Lists

The Greater Washington Sports Alliance just announced the watch list for the 2011 Tewaaraton Award, given annually to the NCAA male and female lacrosse players of the year. Virginia three men and two women on the list.

On the men's side, the Hoos have Chris Bocklet, Shamel Bratton, and Steele Stanwick. Both Stanwick and Bratton were named InsideLacrosse Preseason First-Team All-Americans, while Bocklet was named to the third team. All three had received USILA All-American honors last year.

On the women's side, Virginia has Liz Downs and Julie Gardner, both of whom have started every game of their careers. Downs received All-American honors last season. Gardner has 15 points on the season (9 goals, 6 assists).

"We are thrilled to announce this year’s watch list just as the 2011 season is getting underway," said Robert Sweeney, President of the Greater Washington Sports Alliance. "The selection committees have done an outstanding job at choosing the top contenders for the Tewaaraton Award across the country. This year’s list represents 47 different educational institutions from over 17 conferences and 48 of these athletes are repeat nominees from last year."
