Roberts Dominates in UVa's First Round Victory

Most would have expected UVa to have a strong day on the mound and at the plate today against Navy in the first round of the NCAA tournament but I'm not sure many expected the performance from Will Roberts that the 'Hoos got. Roberts absolutely dominated the MidShipmen by throwing his third complete game of the year and did not allow a run while striking out a career high 14 over the nine innings.

UVa's ace on the mound, Danny Hultzen, paced the Cavaliers at the plate going 3-4 and produced the first three RBIs for the Cavaliers with two in the first and another in the third. 3rd year John Hicks added on to the run parade in the seventh with the 'Hoos already leading 5-0. Hicks launched his seventh home run of the year off the left field foul pole to give UVa their 6-0 lead.

With the win, UVa moves their record to a nation best 50-9 and advances to the next round of the Charlottesville regional. They will wait and see who will win tonight's game between St. Johns and ECU before they know their opponent. Both ECU and St. Johns are actually saving their aces for tomorrow's game.

No matter who the Cavaliers end up having to play they will have their stud on the mound as well. Danny Hultzen should be primed and ready to go. Even though some think and actively say that UVa is overrated, I think the Hoos should be able to pull off a victory and move onto the championship round of this first round.

Of course I will be providing updates on twitter at @STLUVaBaseball and if you want to read some funny tweets I would follow @CB_Daily. They claim that the ACC is overrated this year. Not because they haven't won games against other conferences or because they have bad teams (both of which are false), but because they haven't won the College World Series since Wake Forest did it in 1955. Some people's kids I guess. GO HOOS!
