The first coaches' poll of the 2013 season was released yesterday, with nine UVA athletes coming in ranked, seven of them in the top 25. Matt Snyder and Nicholas Sulzer led the way, with each ranked 7th at 125 pounds and 165 pounds, respectively.
Virginia is currently ranked 11th for the second straight week after holding serve by winning 24-9 against UNC in Chapel Hill before coming home to trounce Duke 38-0. UVA has a chance to stretch its record in Mem Gym to 5-0 this weekend when the Wolfpack of NC State visit Sunday at 1 PM.
Per the NCAA, the coaches' poll has more significance than the polls we see in other college sports, as it is used as part of NCAA Tournament selection and seeding. The bracket is compiled and organized using a mixture of poll ranking, RPI, and overall wining percentage.
Six of the 10 number 1 seeds are occupied by wrestlers from Oklahoma, Iowa, and Oklahoma State, with the other 4 hailing from Penn State, Kent State, Missouri, and Cornell. UVA's ranked wrestlers are below:
Weight Class | National Rank | Wrestler |
