Jack English
Position: Defensive End
Hometown (School): Richmond, VA (St. Christopher's)
Height/Weight: 6'6'' 250 lbs
Committed to Virginia: 6/12/12
Lead Recruiter: Jim Reid
Jack English chose the Hoos over the Hokies after getting offers from both schools in June. English, a Richmond native, got offers from both in-state programs after attending camps at each school, and impressing the coaches. The opportunity to play near home at UVa was too much for the defensive end to pass up. English is rated a 3-star prospect by Rivals, and a high 2-star by 247Sports.
When English committed to Virginia, it was unclear whether he would play tight end or defensive end in college. It's clear now that the staff likes English as a defensive end, and that is probably where he will end up playing in Charlottesville. With his size and strength, English often looks like a man amongst boys on film. Granted, some of St. Christopher's competition isn't exactly stellar, but English shows a burst off the line, and the ability to chase down athletes in space. English will probably need to strengthen up some before playing significant minutes at the collegiate level, but he has the frame and athletic ability to become a great pass rusher off the edge.
English had one of the more quiet recruitments of any of Virginia's signees. After getting an offer at Virginia Tech's camp, their staff felt like they may have gotten on a sleeper prospect early. Virginia's offer came very soon after, and English had a tough decision to make. In the end, he chose the Cavaliers. After Jim Reid's dismissal in December, many thought English might open things back up again, but he elected to stick with the Hoos. The St. Christopher's prospect will probably redshirt as a freshman, but he has the athletic ability to be a contributor down the line for Virginia.
