We here at Streaking The Lawn really hate cancer. We really do. Last year, when it came time to clear out our coffers, we made our annual charity donation to Cavaliers Against Cancer. Now, it's time that you join us in this fight by partaking in the Third Annual Cavaliers Against Cancer Texas Hold'em Tournament, a charity event put on by the UVa Club of Charlottesville to benefit the Rebecca Clary Harris, M.D. Memorial Fellowship at the University of Virginia Cancer Center. Your support helps UVA search for faster ways to diagnose cancer and provide new, personalized treatments for the disease.
I'll be there on May 4th at noon at the John Paul Jones Arena for this fantastic event, and I hope you'll join me in raising money, increasing awareness, taking home prizes, and winning the poker tournament. Except for the last part, because we can't both win this main draw.
In addition to a chance to win over $8,000 in door and tournament prizes (see listing below), all players get a behind-the-scenes tour of the JPJ, a buffet during the event, and an event cup that gets you discounts at our McGrady's Irish Pub after-party. The prizes include four overnight vacation stays, six golf foursomes, lots of autographed UVa gear, and plenty more. To learn more about the prize sponsors and register for the tournament, please visit www.CavaliersAgainstCancer.com. The deadline to register is Monday, April 29th.
The event features three levels of play: beginners, main and high stakes. The Beginner's Tournament is for people who know nothing about Texas Hold'em and want to learn in a fun, relaxed setting. The professional dealers will start with a tutorial about the order of winning hands, how Texas Hold'em works, some basic strategy, and some practice hands. Once all players are comfortable, a fun tournament will be played with prize packages going to the top finishers. A Beginner's Tournament ticket is $50.
The Main Tournament provides a great combination of experienced players and a casual, social setting. This will be the largest tournament at the event and the top nine finishers will win prize packages. A Main Tournament ticket is $60.
The High-Stakes Tournament is for above-average players who want to play for the event's top prize packages. The top nine finishers will win prize packages. A High Stakes Tournament ticket is $150 and includes two beer/wine tickets and additional giveaways at the event.
Last year, Cavaliers Against Cancer raised over $12,750 for cutting edge cancer research at the University of Virginia, and this year, their goal is to raise over $20,000 with your help. The event proceeds support an endowment for the Rebecca Clary Harris, M.D. Memorial Fellowship at the University of Virginia Cancer Center. This fellowship celebrates the life of Rebecca Clary Harris, M.D., a talented physician and researcher who excelled in the study and treatment of melanoma. The ground-breaking work being done by the recipients of this fellowship work to redirect the patient's immune response as a way to defeat cancer without poisoning the body. This research has positive implications for treatment of melanoma, colon, ovarian, breast, and other cancers.
