2013 Virginia Football Roster Profile: Michael Mooney

The past 3 days have featured 60% of our starting OL. Today, we look at one of our backup OLs, #76 Michael Mooney. Just a redshirt freshman, the staff is high on Mooney, who profiles as a very good OT. He will be a candidate to start at OT next year when Moses and Cascarano are gone.

Position: OT
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 270
Hometown: Malvern, PA
High School: Malvern Prep

Mooney was rated a 3 star recruit by all of the scouting services, and ranked in the low 60s among OTs nationally. He was offered by some Big Ten school as well as some other ACC schools. He redshirted last season and is expected to be one of the top reserve lineman on the team. He is listed as the backup LT, which shows how high the team is on him.

Since Mooney has yet to step on the field, it is difficult to scout him. Based on his recruiting film, he has good athleticism and aggressiveness. The main thing he lacked was size, something he is working on with S&C coach Evan Marcus. Assuming the increased bulk doesn't dilute his athleticism, he profiles as a heck of an OT. His film shows a very adept run blocker who finished blocks well. As a pass blocker, he got high at times which could cause problems against better DEs, but hopefully the coaching staff has corrected this problem.

With both starting OTs graduating this year, Mooney should be in line for a starting gig next year. He and Whitmire could form a very good set of bookends for the next couple of years.
