Tight End Evan Butts Commits to Virginia

UVa landed their 8th commit for the 2014 class Sunday, when tight end Evan Butts made the call for the Hoos.

Tight End Evan Butts arrived on Grounds yesterday, hoping to land an offer from Virginia at Mike London's second camp of the summer. The Pennsylvania native did just that, and jumped all over the offer, committing to the Hoos today. Butts is rated a 3-star prospect by 247Sports, and is yet to be rated by Rivals. Butts chose UVa over offers from Boston College, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Temple, and others.

At 6'4" 220 lbs., Butts is a pass-catching tight end primarily. Much in the same mold as Jake McGee, Butts impressed the coaching staff enough in limited reps to earn the offer he was waiting for. Butts also worked out for the coaching staff as a long snapper at yesterday's camp as well. The Epsicopal Academy standout will probably redshirt early to add weight to his frame and improve his blocking technique, but the fact that he can long snap as well bodes well for his ability to earn playing time. Butts has decent speed for a tight end, with his 40 time projected in the 4.6 range.

Virginia has had problems landing tight ends since Mike London took over, and Butts certainly fills a depth concern. UVa has had to move players from other positions to fill the position, and it's nice to finally land a guy that actually projects to that position from high school. Butts is Virginia's 8th commit, for a class that will probably end up just north of 15 signees. The staff must have been pretty high on Butts to go ahead and offer him, knowing his recruitment would probably end right then and there. Below is the entire UVa 2014 class to date:
