2013 Virginia Football Roster Profile: Sammy Macfarlane

Part 2 of today's double dip features walk-on FB Sammy Macfarlane. Macfarlane comes from the hotbed of football talent that is Connecticut. He's just another in the line of walk-on FBs for the Hoos who are really just football players. Fullback is a convenient way to designate them. They play special teams and do the little things that nobody pays attention to.

Sammy Macfarlane is another walk-on FB who came made the team because he is simply a football player. He isn't big enough or fast enough to have a real position at this level. In HS, he played RB and LB, so FB seems to make sense. But he really isn't strong enough, at least not yet, to be a blocking back for a good FBS team. And he really isn't fast enough or athletic enough to be a ball carrier.

So, while he's listed at FB on the roster and depth chart, he's really a special teams player and a scout team guy. He made it into 2 games last year, both on special teams. The Hoos have had a few walk-on FBs make some impact over the past decade, including Josh Zidenburg and Billy Skrobacz (currently the backup FB). Most of their accomplishments have been special teams. This is largely because they are similar in profile to Macfarlane. They are football players. Fullback is just a way to designate them. (Skrobacz, is should be noted, played extensively as a blocking back last year. This was largely due to a lack of a better option.)

Fans aren't going to cheer for him, most fans don't even know who is, and nobody's buying his jersey. But guys like Macfarlane are, and have always been, a big part of the Hoos special teams.
