2013 Virginia Football Roster Profile: Mike Tompkins

Countdown day 55 means its Mike Tompkins' turn. Tompkins is a walk-on OLB who isn't really big enough to play OLB. He's also not fast enough to play DB. He's a tweener, who will stick around as a good scout team guy for a while.

Position: OLB
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 190
Hometown: Ashburn, Va
High School: Stone Bridge HS

Mike Tompkins is a sort of common story. He was a very good high school player who just didn't have the body for the next level. He's a LB in a Safety's body. At 6'1" and 190 pounds, he'd have to be a lot faster than he is in order to play DB in college. And with his speed, he'd have to be a lot bigger than he is to play LB. He's a classic tweener, although probably taken to an extreme here.

Tompkins, however, is a good scout team guy because he can fill in as a fast LB, or can play DB in a pinch. In drills, where guys aren't going full speed, his lack of size is irrelevant, and his ability is all that matters. However, in live play, Tompkins just doesn't have the right profile for high-major college football.
