2013 Virginia Football Roster Profile: Dylan Sims

It's now 53 days until BYU. That brings us to yet another number that the Hoos do not have. So, we'll take a look at redshirt freshman kicker Dylan Sims. Sims is currently listed as the backup PK, but that job is an open competition and Sims could win it. With the Hoos bringing in a scholarship PK next season, this could be Sims' best chance.

Position: PK
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 185
Hometown: Lynchburg, Va
High School: Jefferson Forest HS

Dylan Sims was an All-State Kicker and punter, and was recruited by the Hokies, Hoos and ECU Pirates (all as a recruited walk-on). His career long was a 49 yard FG, and he was 50-of-50 on PATs as a senior.

With Drew Jarrett moving on, the PK job is an open competition. Ian Frye certainly has a leg up, as he was 3-5 on FGs and 5-5 on PATs last year. Frye also handled KOs, although he did not perform particularly well there.

Frye has a big leg, which is probably why he handled the KOs last year. Sims, in this video, shows off his leg. He boots a 60 yard FG, and he shows off many 70+ yard KOs. Even if Frye wins the PK job (or perhaps, especially if Frye wins the PK job), Sims could end up handling KOs.

Most likely, Frye will begin the year as the kicker, but Sims will get some chances as well. With the Hoos having offered a scholarship to PK Gary Wunderlich for next year (and having that offer accepted), this year may be Sims' only chance to be the #1 PK.
