Jeffery Farrar announced his choice in Southern California this afternoon, choosing the Hoos over two other finalists: Cal and Arizona State. Farrar also held offers from Miami, Arizona, UCLA, Utah, Michigan State, Kansas and many others. The Upland, CA native is rated a high 3-star prospect by both Rivals and 247Sports, and becomes Virginia's 10th commitment for the 2014 class.
Farrar, who was projected by many to play wide receiver at the next level, will play defensive back at Virginia. The West Coast native will join 5-star Quin Blanding in the secondary from the 2014 class. At 6'1" 195 lbs., Farrar will probably slot as a cornerback once he arrives in Charlottesville. The Upland High standout has a nose for the football, and will be a great fit for Jon Tenuta's aggressive defense. With so much experience on the offensive side of the ball, Farrar could also be used on special teams and in the return game.
After missing on a few priority targets, the Hoos needed a win on the recruiting trail. Although it didn't come at the hands of their conference or geographic recruiting rivals, Farrar's commitment should help Virginia re-gather some momentum that they've seemed to have lost since Andrew Brown's commitment back at the end of June. Landing Farrar definitely takes away some of the sting left over from defensive back Greg Stroman's surprise commitment to Virginia Tech over the weekend. Virginia is now up to ten commits for the 2014 class, twelve if you count the two 2013 signees who will prep this year. With some recent attrition, Virginia's class may end up being a little bigger than originally anticipated.
