STL's Week 5 ACC Football Power Ranking

Ronald Martinez

We're a little late to the part this week, but never fear, STL's writers will never pass up an opportunity to give you a ranking of ACC teams! We're through 5 weeks, and similar to the previous four, other than the top two and the very bottom, nobody has a clue where to put everyone else!

1. Florida State Seminoles (4-0, 2-0). Last week: 1
FSU got famous Jameis back this week and got a scare from the Wolfpack. NC State lead for much of the game before FSU's overwhelming talent and athleticism took over to secure the road victory. The Noles essentially get a bye this week when Wake Forest travels to Tallahassee.

2. Clemson Tigers (2-2, 1-1). Last week: 2
Clemson finally got to play a D1 team not ranked in the top 5 this past week in UNC. The Tigers and Deshaun Watson did not disappoint by putting up 528 yards on the Tar Heels. The final score only had the Tigers winning by 15, but the game was not even that close. Clemson gets another semi-test this week in NC State, but after being beaten up by FSU, I doubt the Wolfpack put up much of a fight.

3. Virginia Cavalers (3-2, 1-0). Last week: 4
Hoos took care of business against Kent State, as they should. It looked dicey early on as the Flashes had a 10-7 lead heading into the 2nd quarter before UVa jumped on them scoring 38 unanswered points. If the Cavaliers have a hope in a bowl this year and saving Coach London's job they'll have to win again this week when Pitt comes to Charlottesville.

4. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (4-0, 1-0). Last week: 5.
Yellow Jackets had an off week after their surprising victory over VPISU. What does that mean? They get to move up in the rankings! They'll get another chance to prove that the victory over the Hokies wasn't a fluke as they host Miami this weekend. Yes, they're 4-0, but three of those wins came against Tulane, Georgia Southern, and Wofford.

5. Louisville Cardinals (4-1, 2-1). Last week: 6
Other than their week 3 hiccup to UVa, Louisville is loving life in the ACC so far. Sitting at 2-1 with victories over Wake and Miami looks pretty good, especially with Syracuse on the schedule this week. It's at the Carrier Dome, but I don't think anyone expects Cuse to pull off the upset. The Cardinals also need to rack up all the W's they can get as they'll travel to Clemson, play host to FSU, and travel to Notre Dame over their next six games.

6. Duke Blue Devils (4-1, 0-1). Last week: 3.
Ahhhhh, Duke. You have no idea how much joy I got by you losing to Miami. You were the biggest joke of a 4-0 team in the country. You have a bye this week, but I hope others win and we get to drop you even further in the rankings next week.

7. Miami Hurricanes (3-2, 1-1). Last week: 10.
Miami finally took care of business against a decent team this week with their dispatching of Duke. After losses to Louisville and Nebraska, nobody was really sure what to make of the Hurricanes. They'll get to prove themselves even more this week traveling to Atlanta to take on the triple-option of Georgia Tech. A win this week and they could be looking good in the Coastal.

8. (tie) North Carolina State Wolfpack (4-1, 0-1). Last week: 12.
NC State moves up this far by way of losing. That certainly doesn't happen that often. They looked good against FSU even though they were right behind Duke for biggest sham of a 4-0 team (Ga Souther, ODU, USF, Presbyterian). I don't think anyone takes the Wolfpack very seriously, but if they somehow pull off the upset at Clemson this weekend, we will all reconsider.

8. (tie) VPISU Hokies (3-2, 0-1). Last week: 9.
Yayyyyyyy, you won again! You beat a MAC team like Virginia! I'll put no stock in that W though, because you showed the previous two weeks that we can't really believe in you. Hokies travel to Chapel Hill this weekend and I think we'll all pull for both teams to lose. If I really had to choose though, I'll pull for the Tar Heels.

10. Pittsburgh Panthers (3-2, 1-0). Last Week: 7.
We wanted to believe. We really did. After beating BC and bone smoking Delaware, we thought you had a chance! Then you went and lost back to back games to Iowa and Akron (AKRON!). Like many others, we're not sure what to make of the Panthers anymore (#goacc), but they'll have a chance to redeem themselves this week traveling to Charlottesville.

11. Boston College (3-2, 0-1). Last week: 8.
Excuse my language, but WHAT IN THE ACTUAL HELL? BC was able to string two wins in a row against USC and Maine.....and then lost to Colorado State. I don't know. They have a bye this week and travel to NC State next week. I'm guessing we'll see more of BC in the double digit range for the rest of the year.

12. North Carolina Tar Heels (2-2, 0-1). Last week: 11.
Remember when we all though UNC was going to be the class of the Coastal and maybe even challenge FSU for the title? That was a really long time ago. After giving up 120 points over the last two weekends, the Tar Heels have proven they have no defense whatsoever. They host VPISU this week in a battle to see who will be at the bottom of the Coastal division.

13. Syracuse Orange (2-2, 0-0). Last week: 13.
Poor Syracuse. There was hope in Northern New York after a 2-0 start. Then they had to play Maryland and Notre Dame, and all hope is probably lost. They'll play a Big East showdown this Friday against Louisville and probably drop to 2-4 next week when they host Florida State. Don't worry, it's pretty much basketball season.

14. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-2, 0-1). Last week: 14.
Wake is so bad. I don't know who they played. I don't know who they play. I don't want to talk about them anymore.

Here is how the voting shook out. How do you think the ACC ranks out? Let us know in the comments.
