In a week with very little action, there's some big news:
The University of Virginia Men's Soccer team are the 2014 NCAA National Champions!!
Say it with me...
NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!
After a season full of up and downs, the Wahoos hit their stride late and found a way to win in the post-season. As the No.16 seed in the tournament, the Hoos had to go through No.1 seeded (and reigning National Champ) Notre Dame, No.8 Georgetown, and unseeded UMBC to get to the finals.
In the first round, Virginia dispatched UNC-Wilmington 3-1. Then the Hoos had to take the road to South Bend where they upset Notre Dame 1-0. Next, another stress-filled affair in Washington, DC as Virginia tied the game late (:53 left) against Georgetown before winning in penalty kicks to get to the College Cup.
In Cary, NC, the Cavaliers drew the unseeded Retrievers of UMBC, winning Friday night to the tune of 1-0. Darius Madison scored in just the fifth minute of the game, providing the only score they would need.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/cfmaz3QjNv8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
The win sent the Hoos to their eighth National Championship game, having won six of the previous seven (1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 2009). Their foe would be the UCLA Bruins, seeded No.2 in the post season.
Virginia Coach George Gelnovatch put together a brilliant strategy, continuing to build the game tactics around the defense that served the Cavaliers so well in the post season. UCLA, an extremely talented and quick team, posed a big threat on attack with sharp shooters and fast cutters. Virginia dug in, deciding to keep the ball and players out in front of them, and it was executed to perfection.
While the non-UVa. folks in the crowd may have hated it and found it "ugly", Coach Gelnovatch was happy with the 0-0 tie going into halftime. Even the ESPNU commentators sounded agitated by the strategy, but as they say...if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Speaking of UVa. folks in the crowd...shout out to the Hoo Crew members who made it down to cheer for the good guys!

As time wore on, the Hoos continued to wear down the Bruins, thwarting their offensive pushes and countering on attack when they could. As many Virginia fans are now accustomed to, defense was the name of the game.

Time ran out with the score the same as the opening kick off, and off to sudden-death (golden goal? Is that what it is now?) overtime starting. Overtime was mainly uneventful, save a few clutch moments from fifth year Calle Brown.
