Tonight, celebrities of both the acting and athletic variety will take to the red carpet outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles for the 2014 ESPY Awards.
Why should you care, you ask? Well, good question.
This year, our very own Morgan Brian, soccer player extraordinaire, is up for the 'Best Female College Athlete' award!
Morgan, a rising fourth year for Virginia, has a laundry list of achievements behind her name already, with more great feats to come. She is currently the only collegiate player to have played for the United States Women's National Team, earning three caps in 2013. Brian also notched her first goal for the USWNT September 3, 2013 in a victory over Mexico.
Just in her last season alone at UVa., Morgan was named the MAC Hermann Trophy winner, Soccer America Player of the Year, and TopDrawerSoccer.com Player of the Year. That's on top of the litany of conference and state awards. She did only start 25 of 26 Virginia contests, but the one she missed was due to 'international duties'. Whoops.
Production wise, Morgan scored 16 goals and added 14 assists (a league-high for the season, and tying a single-season UVa. record). Basically, she's superwoman.
Against Morgan for the ESPY is Maryland's Taylor Cummings (lacrosse), Penn State's Micha Hancock (volleyball), Florida's Hanna Rogers (softball), and UConn's Breanna Stewart (basketball).
Voting closes tonight at 9ET, so go vote! Get your friends to vote. Your coworkers. Your parents. Everyone.
Men's Lacrosse Coach Dom Starsia was nominated for the 2011 ESPY for 'Best Coach/Manager' after winning the National Championship with a kind of rag-tag group of players, but lost out to UVa. alumni Rick Carlisle (Dallas Mavericks Coach).
Here's the link, one more time, to VOTE Morgan Brian as best Female College Athlete.
