Virginia Cavaliers Football: Preseason practice notes

With three practices in the books, there are a lot of news reports digest. We take a look at the best from around the web.

The Virginia football team kicked off preseason camp this week, and reports have been rolling in from various media outlets across the area. Let's take a look at the news that's been reported so far:

  • Senior cornerback Demetrious Nicholson and all-world freshman defensive tackle Andrew Brown are recovering from turf toe, writes the Washington Post. It's unclear when they'll return, but the Nicholson expects to play against UCLA and Brown "appears he could play in a game if there were one this week."
  • The quarterback position appears settled with Greyson Lambert entrenched as starter. Matt Johns and David Watford will compete for the #2 spot, writes the Daily Progress.
  • The offensive line remains in flux, writes the Roanoke Times. Heading into the summer, it was assumed that Jay Whitmire would start at left tackle. But Whitmire is injured and will miss the beginning of the season. Offensive line coach (and surprisingly good Twitter follow) Scott Wachenheim will try a number of different combinations between now and the end of August.
  • The 2014 roster, released last month, does not include 5 players that were expected to be in camp: defensive backs CJ Moore, Anthony Cooper and Jeffery Farrar; defensive end Marco Jones; and defensive tackle Tyrell Chavis. It's assumed that none of the players will be part of the program going forward, but Virginia coach Mike London has yet to comment.
