Monday Motivation: January 19

Clemson and BC were the latest to join the list of vanquished foes. What else went on in Wahoo-land this week?

Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports

Another week, another couple wins for the Virginia Men's Basketball team. Ho hum.

Before we get to Tony Bennet's squad, let's check in around the scoreboard to see how the rest of the Wahoo teams did.

Women's Basketball defeated Boston College in Charlottesville last week to the tune of 68-56 behind a bevy of buckets from behind the arc. Third year Faith Randolph registered 23 points, her second game over 20 in a row, and accounted for four of Virginia's thirteen treys in the game. Second year Breyana Mason knocked down four three pointers of her own, accounting for all 12 of her points. She also added seven assists and two steals.

With the win (and a tough loss at No.4 Louisville) the Hoos are 13-5 (3-2 ACC). Up next, the Hoos travel to Coral Gables to take on Miami before playing host to Georgia Tech on Sunday at 2pm.

The No.14 ranked Men's Wrestling team took down Duke 30-9 to earn their first ACC victory. The Hoos won seven of ten matches, with fifth ranked Blaise Butler (side note: awesome name) winning by way of pinning his opponent. Sunday, the Hoos host No.9 Pitt (the Panthers' first trip to Charlottesville) at Mem Gym. Get out and get loud. Match starts at 1pm.

Women's Tennis, ranked sixth nationally, opened their season with a 6-1 win over VCU. The ladies swept doubles, all with a score of 6-1, before taking control with the singles. Top ranked Julia Elbaba won easily with a 6-0, 6-1 finish, with Cassie Mercer and Skylar Morton sealing the victory for the Cavaliers. Next, the ladies host Utah at the Boar's Head Sports Club Thursday at 4pm.

Even though Morgan Brian and Danielle Colaprico won't be with the Hoos next season, that doesn't mean we don't still love them with all our Wahoo hearts. This week, both were drafted to play professionally, with Morgan going first to the Houston Dash and Colaprico ninth to the Chicago Red Stars.

Congrats, ladies!

Time to check on Men's Basketball...

STATUS: UNDEFEATED

Sweet! This week the NUMBER TWO RANKED Hoos hosted Clemson and traveled to Boston College to extend their winning streak to 17 games.

Against Clemson, the Cavaliers flexed their defensive muscles as they held the Tigers to just 6-23 shooting in the second half and no scorers in double digits. Malcolm Brogdon and Justin Anderson paced Virginia with 16 and 15 points, respectively, en route to a 65-42 victory. Anthony Gill had an effective 17 minutes with eight points on 4-6 shooting, four rebounds, and a steal. Foul trouble and a second half #BEATEMDOWN kept the Gill-A-Monster on the bench late, but his play wasn't needed as first years Isaiah Wilkins, Marial Shayok, and BJ Stith came off the bench to provide a lift. Virginia committed just four turnovers, and London Perrantes had another game without giving up the ball (and three assists).

Shoutout to VirginiaSportsTV (yet again) for getting the legendary Hoo Crew Polar Bear at the :14 mark!! Also, the AG dunk at the :47 mark made number seven on SCTop10. Not too shabby.

Saturday, the Hoos traveled to take on the Eagles at Conte Forum...where Coach Bennett had yet to find a way to win. With memories of Jontel Evans dribbling the ball out of bounds and Akil Mitchell making a half court, would-have-been game winner just after the buzzer fresh in Virginia fans' minds, the Cavalier faithful were hoping for a solid victory this time around.

Well, success. Virginia emerged with the 15 point win after a typical style game: close in the first, small lead at the half, then wear them down until they submit with about 8-10 minutes left. Patrick Heckmann got a little crazy with 15 points, but solid defense from Evan Nolte in the second half stemmed his scoring. As usual, Olivier Hanlan led the Eagles with 18 points, but the Hoos stepped up in the clutch to put the game away in front of a loud contingent of Virginia fans.

London "Boston/Miami" Perrantes went off in the second half with some cold blooded threes, a floater in the lane, and some laser-like precision passing. Uncle Malcolm led Virginia in scoring with a quiet 20 points, five rebounds, two assists, and no turnovers. Anthony Gill recorded his third double double of the season with 11 points and ten rebounds, and Justin Anderson contributed with eight points (all from the free throw line), one assist, no turnovers, one steal, and one block.

For the second game in a row, Wilkins provided a huge spark off the bench with six points and four rebounds. Shayok continues to forget he's a first year and played with a confidence that led to five points, four rebounds, one assist, and no turnovers. Seriously. How do you scout this team?

For the 42nd straight game, the Hoos have held their opponent to under 50% shooting with the Tigers coming in at just 39.5% from the field. (Thanks for the info, @ErichJBacher!) Although, it's not really fair when there's six defenders on the court...

Is that good?

This is a pretty accurate way to describe Virginia Basketball:
