Virginia Football Recruiting: Richard Burney signs with UVa

Burney will be a fun tight end to watch

Profile: Richard Burney

High School: Hickory (Chesapeake Va.)

Height/weight: 6-4, 230

Ranking: Rivals 3*, ESPN 3*, 247 3*

Additional offers: Buffalo, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Liberty

The skinny:

Richard Burney became the latest member of the class of 2015 to sign his letter of intent, officially ending the recruiting process. Burney received an offer from the Cavaliers last summer, and committed to the Orange and Blue in late-June.

While Cowley is a better blocker, Burney will bring speed to the tight end position. Burney’s 6-4 frame allows him to create matchup problems for the defense, and the 757 native has the speed to take it the distance when needed. In addition to playing tight end, Burney could also be UVa’s future long snapper.

Rob Burns and Evan Butts will have a leg up based on their time already in the program, but Burney’s combination of speed and size might earn him a spot on the field as a freshman.
