Virginia advances to pool play in ACC Baseball tournament

Virginia hammers Georgia Tech 11-0 in seven innings to move into pool play.

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

The STL staff is out running errands, or glued to the livestream of the tennis match, so I drew the short straw of recapping the baseball game today. I'll just check the box score here and...

Josh Sborz, what did you do?!?!?

Apparently Virginia's 11-0 mercy rule win in 7 innings could have been worse. Like, Sborz almost got through it with no baserunners allowed. He ended up walking 2, allowing one hit, and struck out 8. At the plate, the Hoos were just brutal. After grabbing an early 1-0 lead, the Cavaliers scored 4 in the third inning, and backed it up with 3 more in each of the fourth and the fifth. Pavin Smith and Daniel Pinero both hit home runs. Only two Hoo batters did not get a hit. Pinero knocked in four runs...you get the idea.

Virginia advances to pool play with Miami (FL), Notre Dame and NC State:

  • Game 1: vs. Miami Hurricanes - Wednesday at 3 pm
  • Game 2: vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish - Friday at 11 am
  • Game 3: vs. NC State Wolfpack - Saturday at 7 pm
Obviously, pitching will be a major concern for Virginia with Sborz probably not available for at least the first two games, but the Cavalier bats seem to have woken up at the right time, and this team might just be that "Team No One Wants to Play".
