UVA Tennis starts singles tournament play

Six Hoos played in the first round of the NCAA Singles tournament Wednesday.

Women's Team

Julia Elbaba

Elbaba is the #6 seed in the tournament, and opened with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over Emina Bektas of Michigan. She advances to play Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA at 1pm EDT today.

Danielle Collins

The defending NCAA Singles Champion defeated Taylor Davidson of Stanford, 3 & 3. Collins, who is seeded in the 9-16 pool will play Michigan's Ronit Yurovsky at 12:30 EDT.

Stephanie Nauta

Nauta drew the tall order of playing the tournament's #1 seed, Robin Anderson of UCLA in the opening round, and lost 6-1, 6-3. Anderson has only lost two matches all year, and made the All-Tournament team in the women's team tournament at #1 singles.

Men's Team

Thai-Son Kwiatkowski

Kwiatkowski rolled through 9-16 seed Gonzales Austin of Vanderbilt, 6-4, 6-0. He will play Denis Nguyen from Harvard today at 11:00 EDT.

Ryan Shane

Shane is the #8 seed in the tournament, and narrowly defeated Ohio State's Mikael Torpegaard, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(6). He advances to play Benjamin Lock from Florida State at noon.

Mitchell Frank

It is with a glad but heavy heart that we close the door on Frank's Virginia career. A day after he clinched Virginia's second team championship, Frank lost to Baylor's Maxime Tchoutakian by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Ryan Shane/Luca Corinteli

Virginia's top doubles team will play their first round match Wednesday as well, facing Harry Jadun and John Patrick Mullane of Michigan State at 4:30 EDT.
