Former UVA basketball star Joe Harris was traded by Cleveland today to Orlando and was then promptly put on waivers by the Magic.Harris also underwent foot surgery today and is expected to miss 2-3 months, which may not be season-ending as earlier feared.
The trade is a cost-cutting move by Cleveland since his salary put the Cavaliers over the luxury tax and would cost the team $4-$5M, according to reports. Orlando is still responsible for the rest of his salary, which is $845K for this season. If he his able to recover quickly, Harris could join a team later this year, but more likely be picked up during the off-season.
Virginia basketball's 11th all-time leading scorer was drafted by the Cavaliers last season and appeared in 51 games. He made one start in which he scored his career high 16 points against the 76ers. Harris appeared in six playoff games as well, including the NBA Finals. Unfortunately the former Hoo only saw five games of NBA action this year and spent most of the season in the NBA D League before his foot injury.
We all hope to see Joe back in NBA action soon. #Swoon!
