After 20 minutes in Charlottesville, the Virginia Cavaliers are ahead of the Syracuse Orange by 8, 37-29.
Anthony Gill led the way for the Hoos with a dozen points, but the biggest cheers of the first half came for London Perrantes and his nine points, all on three-pointers. Perrantes missed only two of his shots from deep, exploiting a weakness of Syracuse's traditional 2-3 zone defense.
Malachi Richardson was the leading scorer for Syracuse with 11.
Gill contributed three boards to lead U.Va. in that category as well. Isaiah Wilkins and Malcolm Brogdon each have three rebounds as well.
Tony Bennett started sliding Brogdon to the free throw line soft spot in Syracuse's zone late in the first half, opening up his most versatile scorer to create shots. The move paid off, as Brogdon scored twice quickly on jumpers from that spot.
Fouls don't look to be a problem as the second half starts. Mike Tobey is the only Cavalier with two fouls, while SU's Tyler Roberson and Dajuan Coleman each have two as well.
