Former UVa TE Commit Flips to Illinois

Amber Searls-USA TODAY Sports

As many have expected, with a new coaching staff comes changes in the recruiting which obviously includes losing some commits and possibly gaining some new ones.

More of that news came Tuesday night as former Cavalier TE commit Andrew Trainer announced that he will be committing and signing with Illinois come signing day in a few weeks.

The 6'7 235 3 star (rated by 24/7) tight end out of Alexandria was considered a hard commit, but as he mentions in the note on his tweet, after Coach London and the previous staff was let go, he re-opened his recruitment.

As we have come to find out, that usually does not sit well with Coach Mendenhall who appears to have a hard rule against no visits after committing to his program. Well, even though his recruitment was back open, Trainer took an official visit two weeks ago to Champaign, and that was likely all she wrote for Trainer coming to UVa.

With Trainer out of the 2016 class, UVa only has one TE commit in the class in 3 star Christian Baumgardner. Virginia now projects to have 88 players on the roster after National Signing Day. It will be interesting to see what Coach Mendenhall and staff do going forward with just a few weeks left.
