Only 20 days remain until sweet, sweet basketball retakes the courts of our hearts. Today, we will look at two pivotal members of the Green Machine: Justice Bartley and Trevon Gross Jr. While both players are second years, this is just the first year on the team for Gross Jr., who was a basketball team manager last season.
Both Bartley and Gross Jr. play guard and will be instrumental in helping prepare the team for their games throughout the season. Fourth year Jeff Jones also joins the second year walk-on duo on the Green Machine (named for the jerseys they wear in practice).
Bartley played in eight games last year for Virginia, amassing three rebounds and an assist over 12 minutes. That one assist? Maybe the most emotionally gratifying assist of the season as Bartley was the one who swung the ball to Caid Kirven for the Senior Night three-pointer that nearly blew the roof off of John Paul Jones Arena.
Fun fact about Bartley: he has two godfathers, Kenny Anderson (GT) and Kenny Smith (UNC), both of whom went on to play in the NBA.
Gross Jr., who went to high school at St. Benedict’s Prep in Jackson, NJ, is a Sociology major at UVA (shoutout to fellow Sociology majors!). Virginia was the natural choice for Gross Jr., not just because of the top-notch academics, but because his father attended the University as well. Based on his Instagram, Gross Jr. is thoroughly enjoying his time as part of the team.
