The saying goes that with great power comes great responsibility. A modification to make that saying fit college football might be that with great opportunity comes long odds. In order to shock the world, you have to first be in a position to do so, and that is the position Virginia finds itself in right now. It’s hard to think of a more fitting opponent two days prior to Halloween. This game has all the makings of a horror story.

Louisville comes to Scott Stadium today as a massive favorite. They are lead by a quarterback that is in all likelihood leading the race for the Heisman trophy midway through the season. They are a questionable first down marker placement away from being undefeated, and still have a solid shot at playing for the national title if they can run the table.

Virginia, on the other hand, is a team reeling from two straight defeats and has been completely outplayed for six straight quarters. The depth issues along the offensive and defensive lines have become more apparent in the prior two weeks. Louisville’s love of throwing deep matches up particularly poorly with Virginia’s secondary’s habit for conceding long passing plays. There’s a reason the line in Vegas is over thirty.

This has the look of a blowout in the making between a dominant team firing on all cylinders and a downtrodden program in the early stage of a massive overhaul. With those long odds, however, comes a great opportunity.
