Virginia men’s lacrosse head coach Lars Tiffany announced Friday evening that senior goalie Matt Barrett will be suspended for the entirety of the 2017 season due to a “violation of athletics department policy.”

In August, we had reported that Barrett was arrested and charged for drug possession in Ocean City, Maryland, on August 12. At the time, there was no university statement as to suspensions, but multiple outlets received confirmation that Barrett was suspended indefinitely at that time. The latest release does not link it to the previous drug possession charge.

Barrett was a second team All-American during the 2015 season and finished the 2016 season with a 7-8 record and a 47.6% save percentage. He ranks No. 9 in Virginia program history with 469 career saves.
