Perrantes and Nichols Named to the Wooden Award Watch List

Both are on the early watch list for the best player in college hoops

Redshirt Junior Austin Nichols and 4th year London Perrantes were named to the Wooden Award Watch List this morning.

The Wooden Award is handed out each year to the “Most Outstanding Player of the Year.”

Nichols and Perrantes were joined by 48 other collegiate players making up the Watch List. Although the list was confined to 50, any player can win the award even if they were not named to this iteration of the Watch List.

Recent winners include Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield last season, and Wisconsin’s Frank Kaminsky in 2015. The ACC has not had a Wooden Award winner since UNC’s Tyler Hansborough won the award in 2008.

Virginia’s own Ralph Sampson is the only two-time winner of the award when he won in 1982 and 1983. Sampson is also the last UVa player to win the award, although Malcolm Brogdon was named a finalist in 2015 and 2016.

The winner of the 2017 award will be announced on ESPN on April 7, 2017.
