Well, here we are. The end of the road. Regardless of how today’s game turns out, the Virginia football season ends today. The Cavaliers will go on the road to play arch-nemesis Virginia Tech in a rivalry that has been the epitome of one-sided. Despite some fairly entertaining games for the Commonwealth Cup in the last several years, the favorite always wins, and Virginia Tech is always favored.

In terms of stakes, this game is notable in just how little is on the line. The Hokies are already booking hotel rooms in Orlando for the ACC Championship next weekend after North Carolina got toppled by NC State yesterday. A win gives Virginia Tech slightly better bowl prospects, but nothing compared to what a win next week will get them. Nonetheless, this is a game that Virginia Tech does not take lightly, and they will come out with guns blazing.

The Cavaliers are playing for pride at this point, and trying to break a losing streak against Tech that stretches back to before any of them were in high school. The Hoos have put together stretches of solid play, but have been undone by crippling mistakes at the worst times. The goal here is to put together a complete game. That may not be enough to defeat the resurgent Hokies, but it will still be a step forward on the way to next season.

Here’s the big preview.

The final football game thread of the year is open. Basketball team plays at 7.
