Virginia tennis crushes top ten opponent, remains undefeated

Dispatch PAC-12 power in warmup to national indoor championships

In their last match before hosting the ITA National Indoor Championship, the top-ranked Virginia men's tennis team knocked off 9th-ranked UCLA in a one-sided 6-1 affair.

The Hoos took the doubles point with wins at #1 and #2 doubles. Doubles pair Mac Styslinger and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, ranked fifth nationally, kicked things off with a 6-2 win over UCLA's Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell. When Ryan Shane and Luca Corinteli topped Mackenzie McDonald and Martin Redlicki, 6-3, the opening point was secured for the Cavaliers. The Shane/Corinteli pair is ranked #15.

Virginia secured the win in similarly dominating fashion, winning the first five singles matches to finish. Henrik Wiersholm beat Di Giulio in the #6 slot, 6-1 6-2. Kwiatkowski, ranked second in the country, followed suit with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Gage Brymer. JC Aragone sewed things up for the Hoos with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Logan Staggs.

UCLA did not win its point until the last match, a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win for Sell over Styslinger.

The ITA National Indoor Championship starts Friday, February 12 at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Center. Virginia kicks things off with a 6:30 pm matchup with #16 San Diego. The championship match will be held Monday, February 15. Admission to the tournament is free, as is admission to all UVa home tennis matches.
