The top-ranked Virginia Men's tennis team defeated the #16 University of San Diego, 4-0, in hasty fashion Friday night in the opening round of the ITA Team Indoor Championships at the Boar's Head Inn in Charlottesville. The #1 seeded Hoos advanced to the quarterfinals, and will play ACC rival Wake Forest at 3:30 pm Saturday. Virginia improved to 6-0 on the season, while San Diego fell to 4-2.
The Cavaliers started strong in doubles, getting wins from the pair of Ryan Shane and Luca Corinteli at #1 doubles, 6-2 over the 18th ranked pair of Jordan Angus and Filip Vittek. J.C. Aragone and Colin Altamirano clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win over Roman Kalaydjian and Jaan Kononov at #3 doubles.
The Hoos continued the onslaught by winning the first set in all six singles matches. Altamirano wrapped up his match at #3 singles first, recording a 6-1, 6-2 win over Vittek. Henrik Weirsholm followed closely with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at #6 singles over Kononov. Defending NCAA singles champion Shane sealed the victory with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Uros Petronijevic at #1 singles.
The victory sets up an intriguing matchup against the #10 ranked Demon Deacons of Wake Forest. Last season, Virginia defeated the Deacs to claim the Cavs' 9th consecutive ACC tournament title, and run their in-conference win streak to 139 matches. Wake Forest has improved their lineup significantly in the offseason, and proved it by defeating 2015 NCAA Runner-Up Oklahoma Friday night, 4-1. The win was the Deacs second victory over the Sooners this season.
