Virginia wrapped up its 2016 recruiting cycle on Wednesday. The Wahoos received letters of intent from 20 high school seniors who will enroll at UVA this summer. These #NewHoos will be joined by January enrollees Tre Harbison, Matt Terrell, Christian Baumgardner, and Holland Corbett. There have been a number of changes since our last roster update:
- Virginia added three players in the last week as part of the incoming freshmen class: quarterback Devante Cross, running back Wayne Tualapapa, and defensive lineman Trysten "Trey" Hill.
- On the downside, Virginia lost a commitment from Alexandria (Va.) tight end Andrew Trainer and saw defensive back Darius Bratton delay his college entrance. Bratton will head to FUMA for a prep year.
- Finally, two #NewHoos are now projected at different positions than we originally thought: Aidan Howard now projects as a wideout, and Juwan Moye now projects as an outside linebacker.
When the current crop of freshmen are added to Virginia's eligible returning players, it comes out to 90 scholarship players. And it's possible that Mendenhall and stafff will look to add a certain familiar transfer quarterback if all goes well. Virginia eventually have to get down to 85 players eventually, so expect some roster trimming to be done by Coach Mendenhall and staff between now and summer practice.
Virginia fans should pay attention to the list of potential fifth-year players. Mendenhall spoke frankly on Wednesday about fifth years "being earned" instead of guaranteed. It wouldn't be a surprise if a handful of potential fifth-years aren't brought back.
Update: As we mentioned early Thursday morning, Jamie Oakes of 24/7 Sports is reporting that Wayne Tualapapa will go on an LDS mission and enroll at UVA in 2018. That leaves Virginia with 89 eligible players for the 2016 season.
Stay tuned to Streaking The Lawn as we head into spring practice and summer camp. We'll alert you of any further roster changes.
